Hives

Raised welts that may be red or itch are called hives. These skin formations are usually an acute condition that is caused by an allergic reaction or trigger. Most hives disappear on their own within 24 hours. Hives can be very small or the size of a dinner plate and everything in between. At Greenbrae Dermatology, we offer effective hives treatment and diagnosis.

Causes and Symptoms of Hives

Hives are very common and can occur on anyone at any age. Most hives appear from an allergic trigger. A mosquito bite, food, chemicals and many other substances can cause hives to appear. While allergies are a common cause of hives, other illnesses or conditions can also result in hives. Some of these conditions include:

  • Sun exposure
  • Certain infections
  • Diseases like lupus, vasculitis or thyroid disease
  • Stress
  • Exercise
  • Pressure on or scratching the skin
  • Exposure to cold or heat

Most hives go away on their own after a day or more. However, there are hives that can become chronic, lasting for weeks or longer. Hives can itch or burn, as well as cause cosmetic concerns when located on the face (eyes and lips can swell due to hives) or exposed skin.

Treatment Options

Antihistamines and anti-inflammatory medications are a common treatment for hives. Oral antihistamines can be used to reduce itching and swelling, and for chronic hives, taking antihistamines can prevent breakouts. For severe hives, other medications may be prescribed, including corticosteroids like prednisone and antibiotics. Omalizumab is an injectable medication that can help patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU), a form of hives that can last for months or years.

If you have acute or chronic hives and want relief, contact Greenbrae Dermatology today. We can schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists to discuss treatment options for hives at our Greenbrae office.
